Fourth of July weekend is one of our favorite times to be in Portsmouth. The whole city feels buzzy and festive, the beaches are in full swing, and nothing says summer quite like a cone in hand. If you're staying local or visiting town for the weekend, here are a few things we’ve been planning (or have done year after year) that make the weekend feel extra special.

One of the best-kept secrets in town is the top of the Foundry Garage. It has a great view of the fireworks without the downtown chaos, and you can even bring a blanket and snacks.

If you want a casual waterfront spot, BG’s is always a solid choice. While you won't have an unobstructed view of the fireworks, you can indulge in our favorite - french fried green beans.

The harbor cruises on the Thomas Leighton are a great way to unwind a bit and experience the coast from the water. There are a variety of cruises offered, some more dance-y than others!
We love heading to Jenness Beach in Rye for the day. On the way, we’ll stop for cones at The Ice House, or if we’re craving something homemade, Lago’s is a go-to. The Blackberry Oreo is a personal favorite.
